[AllThingD] Who is Amazon’s biggest competitor? It may be a Japanese company you’ve never heard of.

Rakuten is set on challenging Amazon’s global dominance by appealing to the third-party merchants Amazon works with today and by growing it’s digital content business to compete with the Kindle.

We recently learned about the company’s strategy through the eyes of Neel Grover, the CEO of Buy.com, Rakuten’s online shopping subsidiary in the U.S.

For now, Rakuten is admittedly Amazon’s much smaller competitor, though it is dominant in Japan.

The publicly held company is worth $14.5 billion compared to Amazon’s $85 billion market capitalization, and it pales in comparison to Amazon’s mass in the U.S. Buy.com is ranked 410th here versus Amazon’s sixth-place standing, according to Compete. But Grover said Rakuten has a two-part plan for going up against Amazon. In May 2010, Rakuten acquired Buy.com. [...]

A similar approach is being taken by eBay, another e-commerce giant in the U.S.

In November, the Japanese company purchased Kobo, a runner-up in the e-reader race behind the Kindle and Barnes & Noble’s Nook. It paid $315 million in cash for the Canadian company.

[AllThingD] Groupon has acquired its second start-up in the social commerce space over the past month.

Today, the daily deals site confirmed it had acquired Bay Area-based Mertado, a social shopping company that helps consumers discover new products.

In a statement provided to All Things D, Julie Mossler said: “Groupon is excited to announce it has purchased Mertado.com.”

Terms of the deal were not disclosed; however, Mossler said several members of Mertado’s staff will join Groupon, including founders Mehul Shah, Rajiv Bhat and Vijay Chittoor, who is also the CEO.

In November and December, the number of online transactions increased by 37 %, and overall sales jumped by 25 %.  But the average ticket size declined by 9 %, according to Chase Paymentech, which analyzes information across the top 50 e-commerce retailers.

As it turns out, more consumers are turning to e-commerce for more of their everyday spending, rather than reserving online purchases for big-ticket items.

Here are Chase’s three reasons for the decline:

• More consumers are purchasing digital media, which has a lower price point than most physical goods — MP3s cost less than CDs, e-books cost less than paperbacks, and apps cost less than game cartridges.
• Prices for popular electronics, such as tablets, e-readers and TVs, are falling.
• More retailers are offering free shipping, which eliminates the incentive to fill carts to reach a free-shipping threshold.

[TechCrunch News] Intuit is announcing major news this evening around its mobile credit card swiping device and Square-competitor GoPayment reader.

Launched two years ago, GoPayment offers a complimentary app and credit card reader to allow small businesses to conduct charges via their smartphones. Intuit is debuting a newly, redesigned sleek version of its reader.

GoPayment is available for iOS, Android and Blackberry phones and similar to Square’s device, the card reader simply plugs into the audio jack of a phone or tablet. The credit card data is also encrypted, and never stored on the phone.

[AllThingD] Brick-and-mortar retailers are asking consumers to “buy it where you try it” after Amazon disclosed it will be encouraging consumers to treat stores as showrooms through the use of a one-day promotion on Saturday.

Amazon’s promotion will give shoppers up to $5 off on most purchases made using its price-check application. The event serves as a way for Amazon to increase usage of its bar-code-scanning application, while also collecting intelligence on pricing in the stores.

Large and small retailers alike often consider Amazon one of their toughest competitors, but this time around they say the company’s initiative is a direct attack.

“It’s wrong to try something in the store and then buy it online,” said Lesley Tweedie, who owns a bike shop with her husband in Chicago and is hoping that the mantra “buy it where you try it” takes off.
